I have an LLD from the University of Pretoria, as well as a BA and an LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and an LLM in human rights and constitutional practice from the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria. I am interested in the law as a tool for social reform.
My first job was at Idasa PTA. From 1997 -2000 I worked as a lawyer at the South African Human Rights Commission. I then practised as an advocate of the Johannesburg Bar. In 2002 I joined the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) at Wits University where I helped found a project to conduct research, litigation and advocacy to realise the right to basic education for the poorest learners. In 2007 I took some time out of the formal work environment to focus on parenting but continued to work on occasional projects as a legal researcher. In 2014 I joined Section27, a public interest organisation that uses law and advocacy as tools for social reform. I work mainly in the area of education rights.
